President Mnangagwa has appointed High Court Judge Justice Priscilla Chigumba as the new Zimbabwe Electoral Commission Chairperson.

President Mnangagwa has appointed High Court Judge Justice Priscilla Chigumba as the new Zimbabwe Electoral Commission Chairperson. This powerful post was previously held by the Zanu pf partisan, Zvimba woman Justice Rita Makarau whom Mugabe affectionately referred to as his daughter. Rita Makarau resigned when Mugabes regime collapsed

Her successor Justice Chigumba made a powerful ruling against a police ban barring opposition political parties and pro-democracy groups and this angered Mugabe. It is folly for the people to Zimbabwe to trust President mnangagwa to elect a non partisan Zimbabwe Electoral Commission Chairperson to over see the electoral processes which could easily oust him, so its correct to assume the fact that her appointment was not one done in a transparent manner by an independant body panel, leaves a lot to be desired because she will forever feel obliged to Mnangagwa for appointing her and to maintain her position, she will have to do as he pleases because he can appoint and dismiss Zec officials. he obviously still holds the same oppressive authority like his predecessor Mugabe and well before elections, we can already see that the election process is flawed in favour of Mnangagwa, Zanu pf stalwarts and securocrats.

In just over a month in office, Mnangagwa has issued 52 brand new four wheel drives to the Zanu pf partisan chiefs country wide as he knows the rural areas are the Zanu pf power house because chiefs can distribute food aid, seed, fertiliser and land to Zanu pf supporters only and nothing to opposition and activists. Chiefs can instill fear amongst non Zanu pf supporters,

Over the same period, Mnangagwa has deployed over 2000 soldiers across rural areas, again a way of instilling fear into opposition and activists as they cannot freely conduct voter education campaigns.

Mnangagwa has also, over the same period, declared that there will be no external voting by the diaspora. Zimbabweans spread across the diaspora add up to at least 6 million who are basically there because of the suffering inflicted upon them by Zanu pf, now led by Emmerson Mnangagwa. It is not rocket science that these millions if given the opportunity, would vote against Zanu pf and Mnangagwa, so, by denying the diaspora the opportunity to vote, mnangagwa is cementing Zanu pf monopoly over wealth and power.

We have not seen any attempts by Mnangagwa to remove the draconian AIPPA and POSA laws which led to arbitrary arrests, torture, murder, disappearance and forced exiling of millions. These laws are still actively in place and can be whipped up and used anytime to suppress democratic opposition.

Mnangagwa at the 17th Annual zanu pf conference announced that there will be a Zanu Pf TV station to counter the ‘hostile’ independant social media, obviously because he is aware that the traditionally Zanu pf partisan ZBC who would give publicity to Mugabe and Zanu pf while denying activists and opposition any broadcasting space, are now a dead and buried entity of no relavance or impact against the powerful social media.

It comes as no surprise therefore now, that he as president and leader of the Zanu pf party is the man who appointed High Court Judge Justice Priscilla Chigumba as the new Zimbabwe Electoral Commission Chairperson.,,you do the maths! More news to follow. By Sibusiso Ngwenya
